Six Degrees of Time — How Every Watch Connects Us
They say we’re all only six degrees apart — that between you and anyone on the planet, there are just six people linking you together.
It’s a fascinating idea, and lately, I’ve realised it applies beautifully to vintage watches too.
Because every watch you see today has lived many lives. It’s travelled through hands, across borders, and through decades — each owner adding their own chapter to its story.
Every Watch Has a Past
When I sit at my bench and open the caseback of a King Seiko or an old Omega, I’m always reminded that I’m not the first person to see that movement. Someone decades ago wound that same crown, set that same time, and looked down at the same dial — perhaps on the day they started a new job, celebrated a milestone, or simply went about an ordinary Tuesday.
A vintage watch isn’t just an object; it’s a time capsule.
The scratches, the patina, the softened edges — they all tell a story. Each mark is a link in the chain, a connection between past and present.
Six Degrees of Time
In the same way people are linked through others, every watch is only a few owners away from its beginning.
Imagine: a Seiko purchased new in Tokyo in 1965. It travels through the years — gifted, sold, rediscovered, repaired — before arriving here in my hands in 2025. Maybe it passed through six people. Maybe fewer. But each played a part in its journey.
That’s what I find so special about this world. You’re never far from the story. When you buy a vintage watch, you become the next custodian — the next link in its line of owners stretching back half a century or more.
Becoming a Link in the Story
At Past2Present Watches, my goal has always been simple: to preserve and continue these stories. Every watch that comes across my bench is researched, serviced, and restored with care, so it’s ready for its next chapter.
When you choose a watch, you’re not starting its story — you’re continuing it.
And who knows? In another fifty years, someone might be tracing its history back to you.
The Story Continues
If you’ve ever felt that pull toward something timeless — something that connects you to a different era — you might be closer than you think.
