THE WATCH
The condition of this watch is excellent. The all stainless steel case is crisp, particularly on the angled lugs. The sunburst dial is immaculate and the hands reminiscent of a Grand Seiko. The acrylic crystal is in great condition, and shows the dial off superbly
This example from 1971 features the Skyliner's sunburst dial with minimal printing allowing for a minimal presence. The hour markers are sleek and simple and don't disturb the "Seiko" logo under 12 o'clock and the "Skyliner" text above 6 o'clock. It comes with a unworn black leather strap that we think suits it perfectly, but this watch can hold its own on any strap colour.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
The Seiko Skyliner was first introduced around 1961 by Seiko’s Suwa factory as an elegant yet more accessible counterpart to the elite King and Grand Seiko lines. Positioned just below those top-tier models, the Skyliner originally used hand-wound calibres from the 62XX family—starting with the 402/6220 and later the 6222, which introduced a date complication. In the late 1960s, the line saw an evolution with the introduction of the Calibre 6100 series, particularly the 6100A and 6110, which continued the hand-wound tradition but in a slimmer, more modernized form. These movements were extremely thin (just 3.35 mm), 21-jewel calibres that offered smooth operation and improved accuracy over earlier versions. The 6100 series helped refine the Skyliner's profile even further, reinforcing its reputation as a sleek, minimalist dress watch. While the Skyliner line only lasted until around 1971, its blend of stylish design, slim cases, sunburst dials, and reliable movements—especially with the later 6100 calibres—makes it a standout in Seiko's vintage catalogue. Today, it remains a highly respected and attainable piece of Seiko’s mechanical legacy
OUR THOUGHTS
This Skyliner shares a lot of similarities in design ethos, visual identity and functionality to that of a Grand Seiko or King Seiko and at a glance you wouldn't know the difference. These watches are fantastic value for a vintage watch in super condition and comes fully serviced ready to be taken on into the future.
