THE WATCH
This example from 1968 features the Skyliner's silver sunburst dial with minimal printing allowing for a minimal presence. The hour markers are sleek and simple and don't disturb the date function nor the "Seiko" logo under 12 o'clock and the "Skyliner" text above 6 o'clock. Manual wind is nothing to be afraid of especially when you have a quick set date function - well before Rolex had implemented this. There is wear and tear as expected on a watch of this age. The watch comes on a brand new unworn grey leather strap that suits it perfectly..
A BIT OF TRIVIA
The Seiko Skyliner range was a project worked on in the 1960's to 1970's placed right under Grand Seiko and King Seiko. Similar to the likes of Seiko's Sportsmatic, Lord Marvel & Lord Matic lines, the Skyliner was catered towards an everyday consumer. Produced in Seiko's famed Suwa factory - one of the factories created by Seiko to drive competition and innovation.
OUR THOUGHTS
The 1960's to 1970's saw some of Seiko's greatest work as the Suwa and Daini factory were in competition to produce not just the best watches for the Japanese market but the best watches for the world, period. This Skyliner shares a lot of similarities in design ethos, visual identity and functionality to that of a Grand Seiko or King Seiko but for just a fraction of the cost.
