THE WATCH

There’s many forgotten watches in horology history. Unfortunately, most of their stories prove especially difficult to recover today. One of those watches, and one of our favourites, is the Tissot Seastar. The Tissot Seastar has been around for awhile – but not very much of its history has been documented. This Seastar is a fine collection piece, with a story spanning from the 1950s up until today. This Seastar 44777 is in excellent condition, the the vertically burshed dial and roman numeral indices. The stainless steel case is in wonderful condition, and houses a Tissot automatic calibre 784-2 which runs at 18.000 BPH has 21 jewels, a date complication.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

The Tissot Seastar was first introduced in the early 1950s, with the name officially trademarked in 1952. It evolved from earlier water-resistant Tissot models such as the “Camping” (1938) and “Aquasport” (1939). These early Seastar models featured hermetically sealed cases with double casebacks to protect against moisture and dust—an innovative feature at the time, making them reliable for daily wear and light water exposure.

During the 1960s and 70s, the Seastar line expanded significantly. It included a variety of models such as the Seastar Seven, which introduced a slimmer monocoque stainless steel case in 1963, and the Seastar T12, notable for its 120-meter water resistance and association with Jacques Cousteau’s The Silent World. This period also saw the launch of sporty dress-diver chronographs using quality mechanical movements, including some based on Lemania calibers, which were shared with Omega due to their Swatch Group ties. Collectors today often seek out these vintage Seastars for their robust build and wide stylistic range.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Tissot reimagined the Seastar as a true dive watch. Models like the Seastar 660 offered 200-meter water resistance and introduced a more modern tool-watch design. By 2011, the Seastar 1000 took things further with 300-meter water resistance, a sapphire crystal, and features aligned with ISO dive standards, cementing its place in the contemporary diver category.

The modern pinnacle of the Seastar line is the Seastar 2000 Professional, launched in 2021. This model is built for serious underwater use, offering 600-meter (2000 feet) water resistance, ISO 6425 dive certification, and a helium escape valve. It is powered by Tissot’s Powermatic 80 movement, which includes an 80-hour power reserve and an anti-magnetic silicon balance spring. The Seastar 2000 represents the brand’s technical evolution while preserving the heritage of a classic name.

Today, the Tissot Seastar stands as both a nod to the brand’s history of innovation and a modern tool for divers and watch enthusiasts alike. Whether as a collectible vintage piece or a high-performance dive watch, the Seastar continues to reflect Tissot’s blend of tradition, style, and functionality.

OUR THOUGHTS

The Tissot Seastar is an excellent condition, and wears really well, Vintage Tissot's seem to be underrated compared to their counterparts, but you wont find many vintage Swiss watches better than this at this price point. We have brought this Seastar from the past to the present, ready for you to take on into the future.
