THE WATCH
This July 2004 Grand Seiko SBGF027 is a lovely example of the understated design that makes these watches so appealing. Its 34.5mm stainless steel case frames a beautifully textured white dial, with elegant hands and applied hour markers. The proportions are wonderfully balanced, while the original Grand Seiko-signed stainless steel bracelet completes the watch.
Inside is Seiko's calibre 8J55 quartz movement, which has been inspected in our workshop and fitted with a new battery. With no date window or unnecessary complications, the dial remains beautifully uncluttered, allowing the quality of the design and finishing to take centre stage.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
The Grand Seiko calibre 8J55 has a rather clever feature hidden beneath its simple three-hand dial. The hour hand can be adjusted independently, forwards or backwards in one-hour increments, without stopping the minute or seconds hands.
It's particularly useful when travelling between time zones, allowing the wearer to change the displayed hour without having to reset the entire watch. A wonderfully practical little detail, and one that demonstrates how much thought Seiko put into the design of its quartz movements.
OUR THOUGHTS
I've always admired the confidence it takes to leave things out.
A watch with no date, no unnecessary decoration and no complications has nowhere to hide. Every decision matters because there's so little to distract from it.
That's a large part of what I enjoy about Grand Seiko. The company has often been at its most interesting when it concentrates on doing something simple exceptionally well.
There is a great deal of thought behind that apparent simplicity, and I think it's worth appreciating.
