THE 'SPIDER DIAL'
Spider dials are a fascinating phenomenon in the world of vintage watches. These unique dials, characterized by a network of fine cracks resembling a spider web, have captivated collectors and enthusiasts for decades. Spider dials typically occur in watches manufactured during specific periods, often the 1970s and 1980s. The primary cause of these distinctive cracks is the degradation of the lacquer used to coat the dial. Over time, this lacquer can become brittle and crack due to factors such as temperature fluctuation, humidity and UV radiation.
Spider dials offer a distinctive and often visually striking appearance. The intricate web of cracks creates a sense of history and character. Due to the specific conditions required for their formation, spider dial watches are relatively uncommon. This scarcity enhances their desirability among collectors. These dials serve as a testament to the passage of time and the watch's history. They offer a tangible connection to the past.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
Since its founding in 1914 by the ingenious Eugène Meylan, the professional production in Biel/Bienne, has enabled Glycine to offer the finest timepieces in Swiss craftsmanship. Initially specializing in miniature movements, clad in precious gold, gems, and platinum cases for women, the brand soon embraced the gentlemen’s watch, becoming a favorite among the British and American jet-set.
As the Glycine profile expanded and heightened, so too did the horological inventions by Meylan: Most notably, the EMSA module. Patented in 1931, the EMSA transformed the normal hand-wound watch into an automatic charge. This engineering meant that the time could just be set, and the EMSA advancement became a standard that literally altered the experience of time itself.
