THE WATCH
It houses the calibre 4520A, a manually wound, 25-jewel movement running at 36,000 vph, designed for exceptional accuracy and fine finishing. As a no-date variant, it represents the purist expression of Daini’s hi-beat watchmaking philosophy.
The case design sets the 7010 apart from its siblings: instead of the sharp, faceted “Grammar of Design” style seen on the 8000 series, the 4520-7010 features a rounded cushion case with brushed surfaces and polished bezel. Measuring approximately 36 mm in diameter and 9.5 mm thick, it wears compactly yet solidly, offering a distinctly early-1970s aesthetic that feels a little more sporty and understated than its more architectural counterparts. The case back typically carries the gold Grand Seiko medallion, a hallmark of quality.
The a light sunbust white dial is minimalist and refined, with applied baton markers and fine stick hands — a timeless design that complements the simpler, brushed case form.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
The Grand Seiko line made its debut in 1960 and continued until the 1970s (the mechanical Grand Seiko was revived in 1998 and continues production to this day). The most iconic of all the Grand Seiko case designs began as the manual wind 44GS in 1966 and culminated in the automatic 61GS in 1968. The 45GS, produced from 1968 to 1973, with a hand wound Hi-Beat (36.000vph) movement, here with Cal. 4520 (no date), 4522 (date) and 4580 (VFA) versions and coming from Daini, like the 44GS
OUR THOUGHTS
The Grand Seiko 4520-7010 is a fantastic watch because it combines precision, simplicity, and understated elegance. Loved for its hi-beat 4520A movement, which delivers exceptional accuracy and a satisfying mechanical feel, and for its brushed cushion case, which gives it a unique, vintage character that stands apart from the sharper, more angular Grand Seiko's.
