THE WATCH
The Speedmaster Triple Date takes a familiar Omega chronograph design and gives it an entirely different character. The purposeful tachymeter bezel and three-register layout are unmistakably Speedmaster, but the silver sunburst dial opens up another story. Day and month windows sit beneath twelve, a slender crescent-tipped hand points to the date around the dial, and a 24-hour display adds yet another layer of interest.
There is an impressive amount happening here, yet the arrangement has a pleasing sense of order. The silver finish gives the watch a lighter, more elegant character than many traditional Speedmasters, while the compact case keeps the design beautifully balanced. It's an engaging example of Omega's late-1990s watchmaking, when the Speedmaster name encompassed considerably more than the familiar Moonwatch.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
Not every Speedmaster followed the same path as the hand-wound Moonwatch. Omega's calibre 1151 is based on the Valjoux 7751, itself developed from the long-serving 7750 automatic chronograph. Its calendar works add another layer of complexity to a robust, serviceable design — an interesting piece of engineering tucked behind that elegant silver dial.
OUR THOUGHTS
There's something especially enjoyable about a watch that gives you more than one reason to glance at your wrist. With this Speedmaster, the calendar becomes a small part of everyday life: the date hand making its journey around the dial, the day and month changing as the weeks go by. And whenever you use the chronograph, there's the added pleasure of that wonderfully mechanical interaction.
We like watches that reward curiosity. You may be drawn to this one for its silver dial and the Speedmaster name, but we think it's those little encounters with the calendar and chronograph that will make it increasingly enjoyable to own.
