THE WATCH

This Speedmaster Date is powered via the OMEGA calibre 1152, a reliable mechanism based upon the ETA 7750. The movement runs at 28.800 bph, is capable of a 46-hour power reserve and is as robust as the case that houses it.

The case is a familiar 'Speedmaster' complete with a robust 39mm by 14mm shape, prominent on the wrist, but still with classic features of the collection like the pair of twisted 'Lyre' lugs, tachymeter bezel, and a sturdy set of pump pushers flanking a signed crown. It's on the dial where we see the unique features of the design in its uncommon vertical chronograph configuration with a date window at the three o'clock position. A distinct styling of the chronograph registers paired with a classic colour of the black dial. Lumed hour markers further distinguish the look, the overall style ably recalling both historic Speedmaster motifs alongside contemporary design influences.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Omega Speedmaster is a line of chronograph wristwatches produced by Omega SA. While chronographs have existed since the late 1800s, Omega first introduced this line of chronographs in 1957. Since then, many different chronograph movements have been marketed under the Speedmaster.

Astronaut Walter Schirra was the first person to wear one in space in 1962 during his Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. The manual winding Speedmaster Professional or "Moonwatch" is the best-known and longest produced; it was worn during the first American spacewalk as part of NASA's Gemini 4 mission and was the first watch worn by an astronaut walking on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission.

The Speedmaster Professional remains one of several watches qualified by NASA for spaceflight and is still the only one so qualified for EVA (Extravehicular activity). The Speedmaster line also includes other models, including analog-digital and automatic mechanical watches.

Not all Speedmasters are in fact Moonwatches. Notably, the brand has for many years produced a wide assortment of variations on the classic chronograph design, from heritage models to moon phases, to even Moonswatches and bejewelled versions.

One variation to skew from the beaten path of the professional line was the Speedmaster Date, an interesting, loosely aligned series particularly popular around the turn-of-the-century and the decade or so after in models like this example, the black date with reference. 3513.50

OUR THOUGHTS

What is there not to love about the Speedmaster date, it’s now a modern-day classic, with a nod to its vintage roots. This one’s tachymeter bezel is in great shape, the dial is faultless, comes with its box and papers and with a Fully serviced bullet proof cal. 1152 (ETA 7750), which is perfect for everyday use, this 3513.50 is worthy of being any collection.
