Omega's Speedmaster is without question, one of the most important chronographs to come out of Switzerland. Not only is the Speedmaster esteemed historically, but the watch itself is an icon of design. Since the Omega Speedmaster's inception, we've seen many variations of the Speedmaster come to fruition, all carrying their own unique stylistic appearances and functionalities to cater to the diverse applications needed from the owners wearing them.

With a robust and compact design, the Speedmaster Automatic ref. 175.0084 aka the Mark 40, is a stealthy powerhouse in the neo-vintage category of watches. The Omega Mark 40 is a triple calendar, with a 24hr indicator, and of course, a chronograph function with 30 minute and 12hr totalizers. Powered by the Omega cal. 1151 movement, this is all accomplished in a satisfying dial format that is well balanced and clearly legible.

The OMEGA caliber 1151, a reliable mechanism based upon the ETA 7751. The movement runs at 28.800 bph is capable of a 44-hour power reserve and is as robust as the case that houses it. An alternating five-link brushed and polished steel bracelet secures the timepiece to the wrist, the end links transitioning seamlessly with the case.

The case is a familiar 'Speedmaster' but with a robust 39mm by 13.5mm shape, prominent on the wrist, but still with classic features of the collection like the pair of twisted lyre lugs, tachymetric bezel, and a sturdy set of pump pushers flanking a deeply toothed crown. It's on the dial where we see the unique features of the design in its uncommon vertical chronograph configuration, with two windows at the twelve o'clock position showing the additional complications of Month and Day the Date being read from the pointer hand indicating the date set out at the perimeter of the dial.  Applied hour markers further distinguish the look, the overall style ably recalling both historic Speedmaster motifs alongside contemporary design influences.

A BIT OF TRIVA

Not all Speedmasters are in fact Moonwatches. Notably, the brand has for many years produced a wide assortment of variations on the classic chronograph design, from heritage models to moon phases, to even Moonswatches and bejeweled versions. The mark 40 The Omega Speedmaster Mark 40 is named after the Mark series of the speedmaster that omega produced from the late 1960s to mid 1980s.

One variation in particular to skew from the beaten path of the professional line was the Speedmaster Triple Date, although Omega themselves on their site name it in a slight misleading way, as the Speedmaster Day-Date. These are in fact triple calendar chronographs with their own distinct personality, an interesting, loosely aligned series particularly popular around the turn-of-the-century and the decade or so after in models like this example, here, the ref. 3520.50

OUR THOUGHTS

This Speedmaster MK40 watch is a timeless and rare piece from the 1990s international collection. The black bezel on this reference, gives it a closer look to the moonwatch and reduced version, and for a fraction of the price and for me that's what all of the Speedmaster's aspire to be.
