A BIT OF TRIVIA

The Omega Seamaster was first introduced in 1948 as part of Omega's 100th anniversary celebration. It was designed as a robust, water-resistant watch, drawing on Omega's experience in creating military timepieces during World War II. The initial models were highly influenced by Omega's "Marine" and "Aqua" watches, which were designed to withstand the rigors of underwater exploration and military use.

The Seamaster Cosmic was introduced in 1967, jumping on the hype for space travel and everything space related. The continued relationship with NASA only strengthened Omega’s position, as the preferred manufacturer. It generated new life into the Seamaster range. The production run was for less than a decade.

During a period when Omega was diversifying its offerings and experimenting with new designs. The Cosmic was unique in that it was not specifically a diving watch, unlike other models in the Seamaster line, but rather a more casual and stylish option with certain features inspired by the sports and diving genres.

THE WATCH

The 166.036 Omega Seamaster Cosmic has a monocoque (coque is French for hull) case design, made from a solid piece of stainless steel, access to the movement is by removing the crystal with a special tool 107 as stated on the back. A flat back and angled sides make the watch comfortable to wear. On the right side a large signed crown. The case holds the domed crystal without a bezel, Its frosted silver dial is immaculate, with an outer chapter ring with applied steel indices, finished with chamfered edges that catch the light as you rotate your wrist. At 3 o’clock a day/date framed window. Slim sword hands with black infill complete with a tapered sweeping centre seconds hand. At 12 o’clock the applied Omega, automatic at 6 o’clock “Seamaster” “Cosmic” printed in black. On the reverse, the Hippocampus etched onto the surface. Inside an Automatic Omega Cal. 752, 24 jewels, 19,800 beats per hour. The Quickest date is done by repeatedly pulling the crown into the final position.
