THE WATCH

A watch that looks this composed ought to have a little secret. On the Credor 8J86, it is the way the hour hand was designed to move: one-hour steps forwards or backwards, without disturbing the minutes or stopping the seconds. Seiko built a traveller's convenience into what appears to be a restrained Japanese dress watch.

Credor is Seiko's expression of fine watchmaking with a particular eye for elegance. The watchmakers behind the 8J86 treated quartz as something worth perfecting rather than merely making convenient, designing the calibre for accuracy of ten seconds a year under specified conditions. This example wears that ambition lightly, with a softly warm silver sunburst dial, neat furniture and a case that flows into its metal bracelet.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

The little crest above the Credor name has a story of its own. Introduced in 1980, it combines the Japanese character associated with a mountain peak and three stars pointing skywards. Even the name Credor comes from the French crΓͺte d'or β€” a crest or pinnacle of gold. It's a surprisingly grand idea to find quietly sitting at twelve o'clock on a silver watch.

OUR THOUGHTS

We particularly like the contrast here: a softly coloured, almost effortless dial and a bracelet with much more going on when you look closely at its links and clasp. The Credor signatures are small, the proportions are modest, and the overall effect is confidence.
