THE WATCH

welcome departure from Seiko’s typically sporty offerings in the 6139 lineup, the 7020 is a perfect representation of what every modern manufacturer is trying to accomplish with a throwback design. This stunner, however, is the real deal. From June of 1971, it’s a tasty tonneau style with rich color highlights, great lines, and an historic movement. The dial is a soft matte black bordered with a deep orange 1/5 second track that works nicely with the chronograph hands. The matte bi coloured sub register just lifts the whole dial to another level, and the long and lean luminous markers demarcate the hours. The hour and minute hands in black and white are easily legible, and free of chipping or paint loss. The chronograph hand is still a vibrant orange, all have retained their crisp finish. A top of the case is an inset and well proportioned bezel that’s finished with a glossy black inlay. As the dial denotes, its a Speedtimer variant, The 6139 a beast of a calibre, it features a column wheel design with a vertical clutch, and this one performing flawlessly post service. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and it’s keeping time to within just a few seconds per day. It comes attached to an Uncle Seiko bracelet that offers a clean and complete finish. For sure to be a fast favorite in any collection.

OUR THOUGHTS

Speaking of the 6139 movement, it was quite possibly the very first automatic chronograph movement to come to market commercially (May of 1969). The Zenith El Primero and Heuer cal. 11 movements also debuted that year. You can read more about this controversial topic from our friends at Hodinkee and OnTHeDash. Regardless of which movement actually came first, the Seiko 6139 is a steal in the marketplace today compared to comparable watches from Heuer and Zenith.
