The Seiko 4S12‑0010 is a vintage Japanese automatic GMT watch from the late 1990s, part of Seiko’s SUS (Simple & Strong) series. It was primarily a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) model, produced in limited quantities and appreciated by collectors for its rarity. The watch blends sporty GMT functionality with a rugged yet understated design, making it suitable both as a daily wearer and as a collector’s piece.
At the heart of the watch is the Seiko calibre 4S12, an automatic movement developed in the 1990s. It is a high-beat movement running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with 25 jewels and a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The movement features hand-winding and hacking seconds, allowing precise time setting. While the GMT hand is fixed rather than independently adjustable, it works in conjunction with Seiko’s internal rotating bezel to display a second time zone effectively.
It features a stainless-steel case measuring around 40mm in diameter and 12 mm thick, with an 18 mm lug width. The dial comes in variants of black SCFF005 like this one, red SCFF007, or blue SCFF009, depending on the model. We do have all three colour variants in stock currently.
Historically, the 4S12 movement was part of Seiko’s refined mechanical lineage, descended from the 52xx series used in King Seiko and Lord Matic Special models. This meant that, despite being a late‑’90s sport watch, the 4S12‑0010 benefitted from high mechanical standards and reliable craftsmanship. Its status as a JDM-exclusive model, combined with its robust movement and GMT functionality, makes it a unique and desirable watch for enthusiasts of vintage Seiko automatics.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
One might wonder how the GMT function works in collaboration with the bidirectional GMT ring. The basic premise is that the owner will read off the 24 hr hand, which should be pointing at the 2nd time zone that the owner is interested in. The assumption made is that the owner will already know the time difference between his home time (shown by the normal 12 hr hour hand) and the 2nd time zone (shown by the 24 hr hour hand); For example, you are at London GMT, Greenwich mean time and would like to track the time of JST, Japan Standard Time (2nd time zone). The time difference between these 2 countries is 9 hr apart with Japan being ahead. All you need to do is to rotate the GMT ring until the 12 o’clock marker is aligned to the figure ‘9’ on the GMT ring. From that point on, you can easily read off the time in Japan from the GMT ring.
OUR THOUGHTS
we finally have the SCFF005 black dial back in stock, and it’s absolutely worth the wait. Black-dial Seikos like this carry a timeless appeal, and when you see one in person the crisp contrast and understated depth of the dial really stand out, it’s a truly handsome watch. Having worked with watches that used the vintage 52 movements from the 1970s, I have a particular soft spot for the 4S12. Its combination of vintage roots, robust engineering, and modern functionality makes this black-dial SCFF005 a real gem for any collector.
