THE BREITLING TOP TIME 2003

The Breitling Top Time Ref. 2003 is a fine example of the elegant and highly distinctive chronographs produced by Breitling during the 1960s and 1970s. Introduced as part of the Top Time collection, the model was designed as a more refined and versatile chronograph, combining Breitling’s expertise in precision timing with a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic than some of the brand’s more overtly sporting models.

This particular reference is especially appealing for its gold-plated case, which gives the watch a warm and sophisticated appearance. The gold finish contrasts beautifully with the chronograph dial and adds a more formal character to what is, fundamentally, a functional timing instrument. The case itself is constructed from stainless steel with a gold-plated exterior, making it important to distinguish the watch from Breitling’s solid-gold models.

The Top Time Ref. 2003 was produced during an important period in Breitling’s history and can be found with different mechanical movements depending on its period of manufacture. Early examples are associated with the Venus 188, a manually wound, cam-actuated chronograph movement operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour and fitted with 17 jewels. The Venus 188 is particularly significant as the design would later form the basis of the Valjoux 7730 following Valjoux’s acquisition of Venus. Later examples of the Ref. 2003 were also produced with movements from the Valjoux 7730 family. The movement fitted to an individual watch is therefore an important detail when dating and assessing a particular example.

The Top Time family also has an interesting connection with popular culture. A closely related Top Time reference appeared on Sean Connery’s wrist in the 1965 James Bond film *Thunderball*, helping to give the collection an enduring place in vintage watch history. Although the watch featured in the film was a different reference, the connection highlights the appeal and recognition the Top Time range achieved during the period.

Today, the Ref. 2003 represents an interesting combination of style, history and mechanical watchmaking. Its relatively understated proportions, gold-plated finish and traditional hand-wound chronograph movement give it a character quite different from Breitling’s better-known Navitimer. It is a watch that demonstrates the more elegant side of Breitling’s design during the golden age of mechanical chronographs, and makes an appealing addition to a collection of vintage Swiss watches.

OUR THOUGHTS

We really like the character of this Breitling Top Time Ref. 2003. The combination of the compact case, warm gold-plated finish and traditional chronograph layout gives it a wonderfully understated elegance. It feels very much like a product of its era, but without looking dated, and the proportions make it an easy watch to wear. For us, what makes it particularly appealing is the balance between its refined appearance and the mechanical charm of the hand-wound chronograph movement. It is a great example of the more elegant side of vintage Breitling and a watch that has plenty of personality without needing to be overly flashy.
