A BIT OF TRIVIA

The Quartz Rebirth of a Legend

In 1988, after a decade-long hiatus, Grand Seiko was reborn with a bold step forward—not with a mechanical movement, but with a quartz calibre engineered to exacting standards. The SBGS003 is one of the original four models from this landmark relaunch, embodying the ideals of precision, durability, and understated elegance that have defined Grand Seiko ever since.

This model is powered by the Calibre 9587A, a highly refined quartz movement featuring a specially aged crystal oscillator. Seiko’s engineers implemented a long-term ageing process to ensure stability, along with a temperature compensation sensor to further enhance accuracy. The result is a timepiece capable of maintaining an annual deviation of just ±10 seconds—a figure that remains impressive even by today's standards.

The SBGS003 stands apart for its minimalist steel construction, elegant case proportions, and practical date complication. It features a high-clarity sapphire crystal with inner AR coating and black-striped hands for optimal legibility—an early expression of Grand Seiko’s now-famous focus on functional beauty. The case back and crown both carry the GS medallion, and the bracelet retains its original sharp design, integrated seamlessly into the case for a classic 1980s aesthetic.

One of the first four Grand Seiko models after the brand's 1988 relaunch, which features the high-end 9587A quartz movement with date complication, beating most quartz watches on the market then—and now, it represents Grand Seiko’s philosophy of uncompromising accuracy, robust design, and timeless refinement.

Often considered a spiritual successor to the vintage Grand Quartz line and a bridge to modern Grand Seiko.

OUR THOUGHTS

This model has been impressively well preserved, with a crisp case and a dial that remains clean and intact. It still wears its original bracelet, and the movement is performing smoothly within factory standards. All functions are working properly. As a Japan Domestic Market (JDM) release, it wasn’t widely sold outside Japan when new, and examples like this are now quite rare to find internationally. A fantastic chance to own a distinctive and hard-to-find timepiece.
