THE WATCH

The Grand Seiko SBGT001 is far more than simply an early Grand Seiko quartz watch. Introduced in 1993, the SBGT001 occupies a unique and hugely significant place in horological history as the very first Grand Seiko to be powered by the legendary Calibre 9F, specifically the Day-Date Calibre 9F83.

The 9F83 was designed from the ground up with no compromises. Its innovative Twin Pulse Control System generated sufficient torque to drive the substantial, beautifully finished hands that have become a hallmark of Grand Seiko. A Backlash Auto-Adjust Mechanism eliminated the unwanted shudder often seen in conventional quartz watches, ensuring the seconds hand lands precisely on each marker. The movement also featured an instantaneous day and date change mechanism, changing in the blink of an eye, while a sealed cabin construction helped protect the gear train from dust and contamination for exceptional long-term reliability.

Perhaps the greatest endorsement of the SBGT001's importance comes from Grand Seiko itself. Today, the reference is displayed in the Grand Seiko Museum in Ginza, Japan, as the principal exhibit representing the birth of the modern Grand Seiko quartz lineage. When Grand Seiko chose a single watch to tell the story of the revolutionary 9F movement and the beginning of its modern era of quartz watchmaking, it selected the SBGT001.
