THE WATCH
The 5626-7121 shows a slightly different side of King Seiko design. The substantial, faceted lugs give the case real presence, while the finely brushed silver dial brings a gentler touch. Dark detailing through the markers and hands adds definition without making the face busy.
It's a combination that works particularly well. In an era when watch design was becoming increasingly adventurous, Seiko managed to give this King Seiko a distinctive shape without sacrificing its sense of balance. The result is a watch with considerably more character than its understated silver dial might first suggest.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
One small digit makes an interesting difference to this King Seiko. The closely related 5626-7120 uses a one-piece case, with the movement accessed from the front. The 5626-7121 instead has a conventional removable screw-back.
To most people, they're closely related watches. To the watchmaker who has to get inside, they're quite different. It's a lovely example of how a seemingly insignificant change in a reference number can tell a much bigger story.
OUR THOUGHTS
We have a particular fondness for King Seikos that show another side of the range. The 7121 has the quality and design discipline we associate with the name, but its more sculptural case gives it an identity of its own.
That's what we find appealing. King Seiko wasn't a single design repeated across different movements; there was genuine variety and imagination within the family. This 7121 is a wonderful reminder of that, and exactly the sort of individual character we enjoy finding in vintage watches.
