SECOND GERNERATION KING SEIKO
Seiko has recently rekindled the Kings Seiko range and the first straight from this model, showing the acclaim that this timeless watch is held and at a fraction of the cost of the new models, which really does mean you can pick up something so cool.
A BIT OF TRIVA
The Seiko 4420-9990 is one of the few King Seiko models that was officially certified as a chronometer. During the 1960s, chronometer testing in Japan was conducted by the Japan Chronometer Inspection Institute, meaning watches that passed the standard had to meet strict accuracy requirements. This made the model an important demonstration of Seiko’s growing watchmaking capability during a period when the brand was increasingly competing with high-grade Swiss watches.
Inside the watch is the calibre 4420A, a 27-jewel manual-wind movement developed from the earlier 44 series. It was carefully adjusted to meet chronometer standards and is widely regarded as one of the finest manual-wind movements ever used in a King Seiko. The movement’s development shares roots with the work that eventually led to the first Grand Seiko 3180, which is why many enthusiasts view the 4420-9990 as having Grand Seiko-level DNA despite carrying the King Seiko name.
The model was produced by Daini Seikosha, one of Seiko’s two main manufacturing divisions, which competed internally with Suwa Seikosha. This rivalry pushed both factories to constantly improve their movements, finishing, and accuracy. The competition between these two divisions played a major role in Seiko’s rapid technical progress throughout the 1960s.
Early examples of the 4420-9990 feature the word “Chronometer” printed on the dial. However, in 1966 Seiko stopped using the term after pressure and regulatory changes within the Swiss watch industry regarding chronometer labeling. As a result, these early chronometer-signed dials represent a short and interesting chapter in Seiko’s history and are particularly appealing to collectors today.
The watch also represents a transitional moment in Seiko design. It was produced just before the famous “Grammar of Design” philosophy introduced by Taro Tanaka fully reshaped the look of Grand Seiko and King Seiko models. While the 4420-9990 still carries a classic mid-1960s aesthetic, elements of the sharper case lines and refined finishing that would later define Seiko’s high-end watches can already be seen.
OUR THOUGHTS
With only a brief production run during the mid-1960s, the model has grown steadily more desirable among vintage Seiko enthusiasts. The 4420-9990 stands out for its chronometer-rated performance, finely crafted manual-wind calibre, and its connection to one of Seiko’s most ambitious and innovative periods, giving it lasting historical and collector appeal.
