THE WATCH
This is the sort of Longines that makes you look twice because the dial does almost all of the talking. There is no collection name competing for space, just Longines, automatic and a pair of fine crosshair lines dividing the silver surface into four clean quarters.
That geometry changes the character completely. What might otherwise be a very traditional round automatic becomes a little sharper and more purposeful, especially against the angular lugs and framed date. It is still unmistakably a mid-century Swiss dress watch, but one with enough structure to avoid becoming anonymous.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
The Longines calibre 345 is a wonderful example of how complicated watchmaking can serve a surprisingly simple purpose. Rather than using a conventional central rotor, Longines developed an unusual off-centre winding weight with a toothed outer rim, allowing the watch to wind in both directions while keeping the movement relatively slim. Its generously sized balance was another deliberate choice, helping to promote stable timekeeping. Introduced in the mid-1960s, the 345 is a fascinating piece of engineering, with much of its cleverness hidden beneath an otherwise beautifully understated watch.
OUR THOUGHTS
We have a real weakness for Longines that stand on their own, without a famous collection name doing the selling. This is one of them. The crosshair catches your eye, but there's a great deal more to admire once you look beyond the dial.
What appeals to us is the combination of restraint and ambition. Longines produced something beautifully understated on the outside while putting some genuinely inventive watchmaking inside. A watch this thoughtfully designed and engineered deserves attention on its own merits, and that's exactly why we like it.
