THE WATCH

Flagship arrived when Longines was beginning to give its watches distinct family names rather than letting the maker’s name do all the work. This example has the quiet confidence that made the idea stick: slim applied markers, a framed date aperture and the winged-hourglass emblem sitting above the Flagship script without much fuss.

The automatic winding and date make this a more everyday expression of the Flagship idea than a bare-bones dress watch. It still has the neat proportions and restraint associated with mid-century Longines, but there is enough practicality here for it to make sense as a watch to wear rather than simply keep for best.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Longines protected the Flagship name internationally on 20 April 1956, before the collection reached the market. In naval language a flagship is the vessel carrying the commanding officer’s flag. It is a neat name for one of Longines’ earliest named collections: not a technical code, but a little piece of identity printed directly on the dial.

OUR THOUGHTS

One of the pleasures of wearing a Longines Flagship is that its significance doesn't have to announce itself. The name connects it to a collection with roots in the 1950s, yet on the wrist it feels wonderfully approachable, a watch to enjoy as part of everyday life rather than save for a special occasion.

We particularly like that combination of quiet familiarity and genuine heritage. There's something rather satisfying about glancing at a watch you've come to know so well and remembering the history behind that little Flagship signature. Nearly seventy years after Longines introduced the collection, it's a story that still has room for another custodian.
