THE WATCH

The 166.0134 catches the De Ville at the point when the name had become a collection in its own right. Omega could keep the watch quiet: a silver-grey dial, slim baton markers, a simple date and a compact case. It is less about decoration than proportion, and that restraint is what lets the design still look so clean today.

This example has exactly that quality. The dial is calm, the date is neatly contained and the case has enough presence to feel substantial without losing the dress-watch character. It is a De Ville that earns attention slowly rather than demanding it.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Turn the watch over and two small words tell a much less obvious story: TOOL 107. They are not a reference number but an instruction for the watchmaker. This generation used a monocoque case, so the movement is reached from the front by removing the crystal with the appropriate specialist tool. One of Omega’s most restrained watches therefore hides a rather unusual construction.

OUR THOUGHTS

We have always liked these De Villes for their restraint. The silver-grey dial, slim markers and simple date are everything the watch needs, while the slightly broader case gives the design enough presence without making it formal. It is one of those Omegas that feels easy to live with because nothing has been added simply for effect.
