THE WATCH

Omega Genève is one of those names that can be easy to pass over, yet it opens the door to a huge and wonderfully varied part of Omega’s story. By the late 1960s the Genève had become the more accessible side of the range: proper Omega automatic watchmaking wrapped in clean, wearable designs intended for everyday life.

This one is exactly that sort of watch. The silver dial keeps things simple, the applied baton markers add just enough detail, and the framed date at three makes it practical without disturbing the balance. Then there is the Genève script itself, a small name on the dial carrying a much bigger story than you might expect.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Genève had not always been Omega’s accessible range. The name first appeared in the 1950s and was connected with Omega’s Geneva workshops and the precision watches associated with the city. By 1970 the story had changed dramatically: Genève watches had become so important that the family accounted for around 60% of Omega’s production. Few names on an Omega dial travelled quite so far.

We enjoy the Genève because it shows another side of Omega: not a headline model, simply a very well-resolved everyday watch. On this one the Shantung-textured silver dial does the work — subtle from a distance, much richer up close — while the case and date layout keep everything uncomplicated. That quiet detail is exactly why these keep catching our eye.
