THE WATCH

In the late 1960s, Omega was exploring new case shapes, and the Seamaster Cosmic shows how far it could move from the traditional round watch. Its distinctive cushion-shaped case gives the familiar Seamaster an entirely different personality, with broad, flowing lines that feel surprisingly modern more than half a century later.

This 166.026 pairs that unmistakable design with an elegant silver dial, applied baton markers and a neatly positioned date display. It brings traditional Swiss watchmaking together with the bolder styling of the period. And with an automatic movement beneath the dial, there's all the mechanical charm that makes these vintage Omegas such a pleasure to own.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Did you know the Cosmic name actually predates the Seamaster Cosmic by almost twenty years? Omega first introduced the Cosmic in 1947, and it was quite a remarkable watch, featuring a complete calendar displaying the day, date, month and even the phases of the moon. It was among Omega's most sophisticated wristwatches of the period.

Fast forward to the swinging sixties and Omega revived the Cosmic name for something entirely different. Gone were the elaborate calendar displays, replaced by beautifully clean dials and adventurous new case designs. The shared name connects two very different approaches to watchmaking, separated by almost twenty years.

OUR THOUGHTS

What we particularly enjoy about this Cosmic is the frosted silver dial. It gives the watch a different texture from the more familiar sunburst examples, and it sits nicely against those broad, flowing case lines. The applied markers and neatly placed date keep the face ordered, even with all that shape around it.

There are some honest signs of age, including light tarnish to the minute hand, which we've noted in the description. For us, the appeal is in the combination of that unusual dial finish, Omega's distinctive Cosmic case and the calibre 565 ticking away inside.
