THE WATCH
Look closely at the dial of this Seamaster Cosmic and there's a clever little change of rhythm. Omega gave twelve, six and nine solid rectangular markers, then let the remaining hours become slender dark strokes. The date completes the arrangement at three. The arrangement is carefully balanced, with no sense of crowding despite the contrasting markers and date.
The case takes the design in another direction. Where the dial is round, measured and traditional, the case spreads into the broad, flowing shape Omega explored during the late 1960s. The silver sunburst finish catches the light beautifully, giving the watch a character that changes subtly as it moves on the wrist.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
When Omega introduced the Seamaster Cosmic in 1966, it adopted an unusual approach to case construction.
Rather than using a conventional removable caseback, Omega designed the case as a single piece, with the movement accessed through the front after removing the crystal.
It was an ingenious solution, although it required specialist tools and a different approach to servicing. A fascinating little chapter in Omega's engineering history, hidden beneath a deceptively simple exterior.
OUR THOUGHTS
The dial is what draws us to this Cosmic. Those heavier markers at twelve, six and nine, with finer strokes between them, give it a look quite unlike the usual silver-dial Omega. The sunburst finish adds a little movement in the light, while the broad case brings a very different shape to the wrist.
We like that it feels unmistakably of its period without being difficult to wear. The marker layout, date at three and calibre 565 make this a particularly interesting example of the Seamaster Cosmic rather than simply another vintage Omega.
