THE WATCH

The Seamaster Cosmic was Omega letting the Seamaster step away from the familiar round dress-watch case and into something more architectural. The dial still speaks fluent Omega — tidy markers, clean typography and a restrained day/date — but the broad tonneau case pulls everything together into one continuous shape.

That is what gives the 166.036 its character. From above it feels wider and more modern than the traditional Seamasters that came before it, yet it never tips into novelty. This cream-dial example keeps the face quiet enough for the case design to do the interesting work.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

The Cosmic name has a history of its own. Long before the Seamaster Cosmic appeared in the 1960s, Omega had used the name for something quite different. In 1947, the original Cosmic was a sophisticated triple-calendar moonphase watch, displaying the day, date, month and phases of the Moon.

Nearly twenty years later, the name reappeared on a very different kind of Omega. From an elaborate post-war calendar watch to the adventurous designs of the space age — that's quite a journey for one little word on a dial.
