THE WATCH

This 1968 Omega Seamaster Cosmic Date 135.017 has a monocoque (coque in French means hull) case design, made from a solid piece of stainless steel, access to the movement is by removing the crystal with a special tool. The curve of the case ends with the stubby lugs. A flat back and angled sides make the watch comfortable to wear. On the right side is a signed crown. The case holds the domed crystal. Its silver dial has a light sunburst surface and cross hair, the applied steel indexes are finished with chamfered edges that catch the light as you rotate your wrist. Slim sword hands complete with a tapered sweeping centre seconds hand. At 12 o’clock the applied Omega, at 6 o’clock “Seamaster” “Cosmic” printed. On the reverse, the Hippocampus is etched onto the surface. Inside an Manual Omega Cal. 601, 17 jewels, 19,800 beats per hour.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

The Seamaster Cosmic was introduced in 1967, jumping on the hype for space travel and everything space related. The continued relationship with NASA only strengthened Omega’s position, as the preferred manufacturer. It generated new life into the Seamaster range. The production run was for less than a decade.

The Seamaster Cosmic 135.017 is a superb vintage choice within the Omega lineup—far more impressive on the wrist than its 35mm size might suggest. Many overlook it for that reason alone, but once worn, its presence and proportions genuinely surprise. This example is in excellent condition, freshly serviced, and paired with a beautifully suited blue strap that elevates the whole look. A compelling piece that deserves serious consideration.
