THE WATCH

Grand Quartz belongs to the moment when quartz was not the inexpensive alternative to a mechanical watch, it was where Seiko put some of its most serious watchmaking. That changes the way this angular navy watch reads. The Grand Quartz name, day-date and small emblem above six belong to an era when electronic timekeeping was being treated as prestige technology.

The navy dial keeps the face calm, while the angular case and separate battery hatch make the rest unmistakably late 1970s. It is a watch designed around confidence in new technology, not one apologising for it.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Seiko launched the Quartz Astron on Christmas Day 1969, the world's first commercially marketed quartz wristwatch. It cost 450,000 yen. Quartz began at Seiko as cutting-edge watchmaking, not cheap watchmaking. Grand Quartz arrived from that world, when accuracy itself was something worth putting near the top of the range.

OUR THOUGHTS

We like Grand Quartz because it turns the usual vintage hierarchy on its head. This one has the deep navy dial and sharp case that make Seiko’s late-1970s quartz design feel purposeful rather than merely period. The black leather strap keeps the focus on the watch itself. The little battery hatch on the back is the finishing touch: a small practical detail that tells you exactly what sort of watch this is.
