THE WATCH

King Quartz belongs to a brief period when quartz was not the inexpensive alternative to a mechanical watch; it was the new technology Seiko wanted at the top of the range. The 4822-8010 comes from that mid-1970s moment, combining a high-grade quartz movement with the sort of sharply drawn case and carefully finished dial that Seiko had already taught collectors to notice on its mechanical watches.

This example makes that crossover particularly easy to see. The textured green dial changes character with the light, while the broad facets of the steel case and fitted bracelet give it a very deliberate 1970s shape. It looks like a serious Seiko first and a quartz watch second, which is rather the point.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

The Calibre 4822 has a wonderfully mechanical solution to a quartz-age problem. Pull the crown to set the time and the seconds hand can jump forward to a nearby reference position, helping the owner synchronise the watch more precisely. It is a small detail, but it captures how Seiko was thinking at the time: quartz had solved the problem of accuracy, so the next job was making that accuracy easier to use.

OUR THOUGHTS

For us, it is the combination of that textured green dial and the angular steel case that makes this one. The colour gives the watch personality without losing the restrained feel you expect from a King Quartz, and the fitted bracelet lets the whole design run from dial to wrist rather than stopping at the lugs.

These early King Quartz watches are also a lovely reminder that the quartz revolution was once the expensive, clever end of watchmaking. If you want a vintage Seiko that tells that story without looking like a history lesson, this 4822-8010 does it rather well.
