THE WATCH
Look past the little KING QUARTZ lettering and this could almost be a smart mechanical Seiko from the 1970s. The finely textured silver sunburst dial catches the light quietly, while the angular case and sharply defined lugs belong to a decade that liked its watch design precise and purposeful. That contrast is what makes this 5856-8040 so interesting: familiar watchmaking on the outside, a very different approach to keeping time within.
By 1977, quartz had become a showcase for Seiko's technical ambition. The King Quartz range sat well above the idea of a disposable battery watch, and the 58-series movements represented a new generation from Daini Seikosha. This example retains the applied details and considered proportions of a traditional dress watch, with its grey leather strap giving the angular case a slightly softer appearance.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
Seiko's King Quartz story was developed by two different manufacturing divisions. Suwa made the 48-series watches, while Daini introduced the 58-series in 1977. The 5856 is Daini's day-and-date version, so two watches carrying the same KING QUARTZ name could belong to different branches of Seiko's engineering story. A small detail on the caseback can open up a surprisingly big chapter.
OUR THOUGHTS
There's a great deal to enjoy about these early King Quartz watches, particularly when you consider how much engineering Seiko was putting into quartz at the time. We like the contrast between the crisp case design and the delicate finish of the dial, while those dark-accented hour markers add just enough definition. The grey strap works particularly well here, allowing the shape of the case to stand out. And there's something rather charming about the little battery hatch on the caseback, a reminder of an era when quartz was still something special, designed to be maintained rather than thrown away.
