THE 5740-1990

This July 1965 Seiko Lord Marvel 5740-1990 is a lovely example of Japanese watchmaking from the mid-1960s. Its 35mm gold-filled case frames an elegant sunburst dial, with applied baton markers and beautifully shaped dauphine hands. The domed acrylic crystal adds to its classic appearance, while an unworn brown leather strap completes the watch.

Inside is Seiko's 23-jewel calibre 5740A, a manually wound movement operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. Fully serviced in our workshop, it represents the thoughtful, robust engineering that helped establish Seiko's reputation during this important period.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Introduced in 1958, the Lord Marvel was one of Seiko's finest watches, arriving two years before the first Grand Seiko and three years before King Seiko.

Its influence went further than simply establishing Seiko's growing confidence in mechanical watchmaking. When the first Grand Seiko appeared in 1960, its large, beautifully legible hour markers and hands drew directly from the Lord Marvel's design. It's a wonderful connection between these early watches and the collection that would eventually become Seiko's flagship.

OUR THOUGHTS

I've always had a soft spot for the Lord Marvel. There's something very satisfying about the simplicity of these watches, particularly the combination of a gold-filled case, elegant dauphine hands and a beautifully restrained dial. This 1965 example captures that appeal wonderfully. It doesn't need elaborate complications or bold styling to be interesting; the quality of the design and the history behind the movement are quite enough.
