THE WATCH

The 5606-7070 is a good example of why the Lord Matic has become such an interesting part of vintage Seiko. It sits in that space where an everyday automatic watch was being given the sharper casework, slimmer proportions and more considered dial treatments that were spreading through Seiko at the end of the 1960s.

This example has one of the details that makes the reference work particularly well: a pale silver dial whose outer section carries a fine texture around the cleaner centre. Add the applied markers and compact LM emblem and it has far more going on than a simple silver dress watch, without becoming busy.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

The 56-series sits in an important part of Seiko’s mechanical family tree. Lord Matic used the 5606 branch, while related 56-series architecture was developed into King Seiko and Grand Seiko. It makes Lord Matic part of the same period of movement development that produced some of Seiko’s most collected mechanical watches.

OUR THOUGHTS

We like this 7070 because the dial does more than first glance suggests. The pale silver centre is calm, then the textured outer section adds a second layer as the light moves across it. Paired with the compact LM signature and sharper case, it is exactly the sort of Lord Matic that rewards looking twice.
