THE WATCH

Lord Matic sat in one of the most interesting places in Seiko’s early-1970s range. It was designed as a serious everyday automatic below King Seiko, but references like the 5606-7191 were given enough shape and dial character to stand on their own rather than feel like a lesser version of something else.

This example makes the point immediately. The graduated green sunburst dial carries most of the personality, shifting tone with the light while the applied markers, day-date and compact case keep the overall design disciplined. It is colourful without becoming loud — very Seiko, and very much of 1972.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Period advertising described Lord Matic as a watch for “men on the way to the top.” More than fifty years later that line has aged in an interesting way. Lord Matic is no longer about signalling where somebody is heading; for many vintage Seiko people it has become an “if you know, you know” watch — recognised for the design and engineering rather than the name on the dial.

OUR THOUGHTS

For us, it is the green dial that earns this 7191 its place. It gives the watch energy, but the rest of the design stays restrained enough to let the colour do the work. Add the useful day-date and clean case shape and it becomes exactly the kind of Lord Matic we enjoy: distinctive, wearable and unmistakably Seiko.
