THE WATCH

The Seiko Bell-Matic is a fascinating example of how much Japanese watchmaking was changing during the 1960s. Seiko had managed to put a mechanical alarm into an automatic wristwatch without making it look like a complicated piece of equipment.

This early 4006-7010 captures that idea beautifully. With its white sunburst dial and restrained design, it has much of the elegance of Seiko's conventional dress watches. Yet behind that familiar appearance is a watch designed to do something rather unusual: remind its owner that it was time to be somewhere else.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

In 1967, Seiko offered a variation of the 4006-7010 called the Business Bell. Those words were actually printed on the dial.

It's a wonderful little detail of the period. Seiko wasn't simply selling a clever movement; it was presenting a wristwatch as a useful companion to the working day. Appointments, meetings and busy schedules suddenly had their own mechanical reminder.

It's difficult to imagine a watch being marketed quite so literally today.

OUR THOUGHTS

What I like about the Bell-Matic is that it has a purpose beyond telling the time, but never takes itself too seriously.

And the best bit? Hearing it ring. There is something immensely satisfying about a watch making its own little noise, entirely through mechanical engineering.

It's one of those watches that reminds us why collecting vintage Seiko can be such fun.
