The Vulcain Cricket 100102.008 is a modern interpretation of one of watchmaking’s most historically significant complications: the mechanical alarm. Produced around the mid-2010s, it sits within Vulcain’s long-running Cricket line, which dates back to 1947. This reference blends that heritage with contemporary finishing, offering a clean, versatile design that leans toward classic proportions while remaining easy to wear day-to-day.

THE WATCH

The watch features a 38mm stainless steel case, a size that feels very balanced on the wrist and aligns well with vintage-inspired proportions. This example come with a stunning blue enamel dial with guilloche detailing.

At its core is Vulcain’s in-house Cricket movement, a manually wound calibre built around a dual-barrel system, one barrel dedicated to timekeeping and the other to powering the alarm. This separation helps maintain consistent performance across both functions. The defining feature is the mechanical alarm itself, which produces a distinctive buzzing sound as a hammer strikes a membrane within the case. It’s a genuinely functional complication, capable of sounding for roughly 15 to 20 seconds when triggered.

From a design perspective, the watch carries subtle cues from mid-century models, including a clean dial layout and a central alarm-setting hand. The finishing is more modern than vintage pieces, with polished surfaces and contemporary materials, making it feel like a refined evolution rather than a direct reissue. It sits comfortably between dress and casual, giving it a versatility that works well in a daily rotation.

A BIT OF TRIVIA

Historically, the Cricket holds a unique place in horology. It gained recognition as “The President’s Watch” after being worn by several US presidents, and Vulcain remains one of the few brands to have consistently produced in-house mechanical alarm movements. This gives the 100102.008 a strong sense of continuity with the brand’s past, rather than being a superficial homage.

From a watchmaker’s standpoint, the Cricket movement is well-engineered but naturally more complex than a standard time-only calibre due to the alarm mechanism. The dual-barrel layout helps reduce strain on individual components, which is beneficial for longevity when properly maintained. Servicing is more involved, but the system itself is proven and robust.

OUR THOUGHTS

The Vulcain Cricket, what's not to love, this is a step away from the 'Presidents watch' and the time is something else, but Overall, the 100102.008 is a thoughtful blend of history, mechanical interest, and modern usability. It’s the kind of watch that tends to appeal more to someone who appreciates what’s happening under the dial, rather than someone focused purely on brand recognition.
